Boca hammers Newell’s, reaches Primera Division Group A summit

BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Boca Juniors climbed to the top of Argentina's Primera Division Group A standings on Sunday with a 5-0 home victory over Newell's Old Boys.

Milton Jimenez struck two early goals before Ayrton Costa added a third just after the hour at La Bombonera. Brian Aguirre and Lautaro Blanco completed the rout as Boca strolled to its fourth win of the campaign.

"We have been playing well despite the fact we haven't always got the results we've wanted," Gimenez said after the match. "It's nice to be rewarded for our hard work. In this match, unlike some of our last few games, everything seemed to go our way."

Boca now has 17 points from 11 outings and is ahead of second-placed Union Santa Fe on goal difference. Newell's is 14th in the 15-team group with 10 points.

In Rosario, Victor Malcorra scored a second-half winner as Rosario Central came from a goal down to record a 2-1 home victory over River Plate.

Colombian forward Miguel Borja gave the Buenos Aires giants the lead with a 10th-minute strike after combining with compatriot Juan Fernando Quintero.

Franco Ibarra equalized by pouncing on a loose ball after a free-kick and smashing a 12-yard shot into the top-right corner.

River was reduced to 10 men just before halftime when Juan Portillo was sent off for a bad foul that earned him a second yellow card.

Malcorra put his side ahead in the 58th minute, latching onto a rushed defensive clearance and rifling a left-footed shot into the bottom-left corner.

Rosario Central is now fifth in Group B with 18 points, behind River on goal difference.
