Dunhuang Calendar 2023, as a cultural and creative product of Dunhuang, home of the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site Mogao Grottoes, was recently published by Beijing-based CITIC Press Group.
The calendar contains pictures of 365 copied works of murals and restored painted sculptures in Dunhuang created by Dunhuang Art Institute.
This is the second one of the series. The Dunhuang Calendar 2022 published in 2021 was popular, and achieved 9.1 points out of 10 on China's review site Douban.
Compared with the 2022 version, the new one highlights seasons and 24 solar terms, and shows scenes from everyday life in the ancient times.
It also shows ancient musical instruments and architecture, so that people can get a glimpse of the traditional culture.
Every page has experts' explanations of the picture, including its historical background, painting techniques and aesthetic values.
