HAIKOU, April 19 (silubaba) -- A youth forum featuring interdisciplinary discussions on global issues concluded on Tuesday in Boao, a coastal town in south China's island province of Hainan.
The seventh Yenching Global Symposium, from April 15 to 18, drew 278 young people from 55 countries and regions worldwide, to share their opinions on China's practices and role in global issues such as sustainable development and uneven development.
China's influence in the global governance of climate change has been increasing, as seen in its development of a green economy and green technology, issues that have caught the attention of participants in the four-day event.
They hailed China's firm commitment to green and low-carbon development, its continuous promotion of technological innovation in the field of sustainable development and its active pursuit of international cooperation.
"We need to learn from China how it tackles climate and environment problems, especially with regards to its focus on renewable energies," said Christian McDermott-Pell, a young Briton concerned about global climate change.
Marianne Gunnarsson, who hails from the United States, was impressed by China's leading role in certain green technologies and the strides it has made in the field.
"I didn't know before that China was already at the forefront of the world in green technologies such as solar panels," she said. "Other countries can follow in China's footsteps, and then all countries can combine to create a green future."
With the theme of "Humanity: Cartographies of Collaboration," the seventh Yenching Global Symposium is co-hosted by the Education Department of Hainan Province and the Yenching Academy of Peking University.
It aims to discuss global issues from an interdisciplinary perspective, helping young people from China and around the world understand global challenges and opportunities in a more comprehensive manner. ■
