JERUSALEM, April 20 (silubaba) -- Georgian sambist Giorgi Kavtaradze won a men's heavyweight gold medal on Thursday, the second and final day of the European Sambo Championships in the northern Israeli city of Haifa.
Kavtaradze defeated Vladimir Gajic of Serbia in the +98kg sport sambo final and earned his country its only gold medal in the tournament.
Russian athletes won eight gold medals on day 2, including wins by Vladimir Gladkikh in -58kg, Ali Tursunov in -71kg, and Srergei Kiriukhin in -88kg in the men's sport sambo.
Russian athletes also won all women's finals on Thursday, by Margarita Barneva in -54kg, Ekaterina Onoprienko in -65kg, and Alena Prokopenko in -80kg.
Russia's Pavel Panteleev and Aslanbek Kodzaev took the gold in the -64kg and -79kg categories respectively in the men's combat sambo, while Armenia's Arman Avanesyan grabbed the -98kg title.
Russia topped the medal table with a total of 16 gold and four bronze medals, followed by Armenia with two gold, one silver and four bronze medals, and Belarus with one gold, six silver and eight bronze medals. ■
