JERUSALEM, April 23 (silubaba) -- Israel's rugby team climbed to first place in the Conference 1 South division of the Rugby Europe International Championships after achieving a 50-7 home win over Slovenia on Saturday.
If Bulgaria fails to win its remaining two matches against Slovenia and Cyprus, Israel will advance to the promotion playoff against top finisher in the Conference 1 North division, with the winner reaching the Trophy competition.
Israel scored eight tries against Slovenia, which gave them a bonus point in the table in addition to the regular four points for the win, with three scored by Gal Aviram and two more by Yotam Shulman, in a match held in Yizre'el in northern Israel.
Uri Gail, Ori Abutbul and Mor Kalifon added one try each for Israel. Bor Jamnik scored the only try for Slovenia.
After completing its four matches in the tournament, Israel has 14 points, four more than Malta. Bulgaria has eight points from two matches, with Cyprus six from three matches. Slovenia remains without any point from three matches.
Bulgaria will host Slovenia on April 29 and play in Cyprus on May 13. ■
