RIO DE JANEIRO, April 24 (silubaba) -- Winger Danilo Pinheiro struck late as Botafogo rose to second in Brazil's Serie A standings on Monday with a 2-1 victory at Bahia.
Junior Santos put the visitors ahead just before the half hour when he combined with Francisco Soares before sending a cool finish into the bottom right corner.
The hosts drew level on the stroke of halftime through Vitor Jacare, who cut onto his left-foot and beat goalkeeper Marcos Felipe at his near post.
Pinheiro, a second-half substitute for Lucas Fernandes, restored Botafogo's lead with a 25-yard drive after another assist from Soares.
"I'm delighted with the way tonight went," Pinheiro said. "There is a healthy competition for a place. Of course I want to play all of the time and I'm glad to have made the most of my opportunity."
The result at Arena Fonte Nova means Botafogo now have six points from their first two matches as they trail leaders Fluminense on goal difference. Bahia are 18th in the 20-team standings with two losses so far.
"We've always been very strong defensively and now we're showing that we can also be dangerous going forward," Pinheiro added.
Botafogo's next match in the Serie A will be a fixture against Rio de Janeiro rivals Flamengo at the Maracana stadium on Sunday. Bahia will visit Vasco da Gama on Monday. ■
