RIO DE JANEIRO, April 26 (silubaba) -- Alexi Stival has stepped down as manager of Corinthians after less than a week in the role, the Brazilian club said on Wednesday.
Stival, who is better known as Cuca, cited personal reasons for the decision, which followed a penalty shootout victory over Remo in the Copa do Brasil third round.
"Corinthians confirm that Cuca is no longer in charge of the first team after he asked for time to be with his family to resolve private matters," the Sao Paulo club said in a statement.
The 59-year-old's appointment had drawn fierce criticism from Corinthians fans, who called for the coach to be brought to account for his alleged involvement in a sexual assault case in Switzerland 36 years ago. The veteran coach has denied the accusations.
"There comes a time when you weigh up what's worthwhile and what's not worthwhile in life," Cuca told reporters after Wednesday's match.
"Right now, I want to prioritize my family, which is the most important thing I have in the world," he added. ■
