MADRID, April 28 (silubaba) -- China's Zheng Qinwen, the 22nd seed, moved into the last-32 of the WTA Madrid Open after a difficult match against American Caty McNally on Friday.
Zheng played two hours and 15 minutes in the unseasonally hot weather, before claiming a 6-4, 7-6(3) win over McNally who pushed her all of the way in the morning session.
The Friday morning session did see a surprise in the women's tournament, with seventh seed Elena Rybakina losing a three-set marathon, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to Anna Kalinskaya.
Elsewhere, the eighth seed Daria Kasatkina beat Anastasia Pavlyucenkova 6-4, 6-3 and 11th seed Barbora Krejcikova triumphed 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 against Danka Kovinic.
There was a big surprise in the men's competition when the third seed Casper Ruud of Norway suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Italy's Matteo Arnaldi.
Fifth seed Andrey Rublev had a hard-won 7-5, 6-4 win over former Madrid finalist, Stan Wawrinka, while Lorenzo Musetti (15th seed) and Grigor Dimitrov also qualified for the last-32. ■
