SEOUL, April 28 (silubaba) -- The world records of men's and women's speed climbing had been refreshed six times within a day at the IFSC World Cup here on Friday, as the new record holders Veddriq Leonardo from Indonesia and Poland's Miroslaw won the men's and women's events respectively.
In the qualifying round in the morning, Leonardo finished with 4.98 seconds, lowering the previous record of 5.00 seconds created by his compatriot Kiromal Katibin and accomplishing the first-ever sub-five-second climb on the standard 15-meter wall.
The Indonesian kept his momentum into the final, where he further improved the record to 4.90 seconds in the 1/4 round and sealed the gold in his clash with China's Long Jinbao.
China's 17-year-old Wang Xinshang claimed the bronze in his international debut with 5.11 seconds.
Miroslaw continued her dominance in women's event as the 29-year-old broke her own record of 6.53 seconds in her first climb of the season with 6.46 seconds. Later, she flew up the wall again and again to refresh the mark to 6.37 seconds, 6.35 seconds, and 6.25 seconds in her final attempt to win the gold.
"I'm so happy with the result as I have wished for this for a long time," said Miroslaw, adding that she was also happy for the girls who participated in such a fast match and she hoped that together they could make new history for women's speed climbing.
Poland's Natalia Kalucka and Indonesia's Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi joined Miroslaw on the podium with second and third place. ■
