JERUSALEM, April 29 (silubaba) -- Israel has been chosen to host the 3x3 basketball Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament (UOQT), the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Israel Basketball Association (IBBA) announced on Saturday.
The FIBA tournament will include eight teams per gender competing over two days for one spot for men and women each at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The participants, for each gender, will be Israel and the best seven teams in the national federation ranking which have not played in the Olympic basketball tournaments in the last two Games at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. The dates of the tournament have not yet been determined.
The Olympic tournament will include eight men's and women's teams each, including at least one gender team of host nation France.
Three additional qualifying teams of each gender will be determined according to the world ranking, while the remaining spots will be decided in two additional qualifying tournaments whose host countries have not yet been announced.
"To have a major 3x3 event in a traditional basketball country like Israel confirms the growth of our second discipline," said FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.
IBBA President Amiram Halevy added that "we will provide everyone who comes to play, referee or watch the games a great experience." ■
