Legia beat Rakow on penalties to win Polish Cup-silubaba news

WARSAW, May 2 (silubaba) -- Legia lifted the Polish Cup after beating Rakow Czestochowa 6-5 on penalties here on Tuesday evening.

Rakow aimed to take revenge on Legia, which is just one step from securing the league's title, as they lost to Legia 3-1 in the Ekstraklasa a month ago.

Marek Papszun's side attacked from the very beginning on Tuesday, and they got a reward just after six minutes. Yuri Ribeiro fouled Fran Tudor, who would have run one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Referee Piotr Lasyk used the VAR system to watch the replay and showed Ribeiro a red card.

Rakow kept a high pace, creating several chances. Striker Vladislavs Gutkovskis should have put his team in front with 11 minutes left on the clock, but Kacper Tobiasz made a stunning save to keep a goalless draw.

As Legia was fully focused on their defense, around 44,000 fans at the National Stadium in Warsaw did not see any goals in 90 minutes and then in extra time.

Legia dealt with the pressure better than Rakow in the penalty shootout. Maik Nawrocki fired the ball under the crossbar to make it 6-5, while a moment later Tobiasz saved Mateusz Wdowiak's shot to lead Legia to the massive victory.
