WARSAW, May 5 (silubaba) -- Poland beat Romania 6-2 at the Ice Hockey World Championship 2023 Division A to get a promotion to the elite in Nottingham, United Kingdom on Friday.
Poland had been waiting for the promotion since 1992. After victories over Lithuania, Italy and South Korea, the players coached by Robert Kalaber were just one step from achieving their goal, as they were in the second position of the Division A, just behind Britain.
Before Friday's clash, Poland were seen as strong favorites, as two months earlier they smashed Romania 8-0 in a friendly match.
However, in the first period the team led by Julius Penzez surprised the rivals as Zsolt Peter broke the deadlock in the ninth minute. Poland responded in the best possible way. Skipper Krystian Dziubinski levelled the result just after the break, and then Bartlomiej Jeziorski, Bartosz Fraszko and Alan Lyszczarczyk also found the net to make it 4-1.
Romania's Balazs Hajdo cut the deficit to 4-2 with five minutes to go, but Poland dominated in the final stage of the game.
Dziubinski found his second score after a perfect counter attack, and the last minute witnessed Kamil Walega turn a stunning Pawel Zygmunt pass into the goal. ■
