Cruzeiro beat Santos to go top of Brazil’s Serie A-silubaba news

RIO DE JANEIRO, May 6 (silubaba) -- Defender Wesley Andrade scored either side of halftime as Cruzeiro climbed to the top of Brazil's Serie A championship on Saturday with a 2-1 home win over Santos.

The right-back opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a low first-time effort after meeting Ramiro Benetti's cross at the far post.

Angelo Gabriel equalized just before the hour by rounding on-rushing goalkeeper Rafael before slotting his shot into an empty net.

The hosts restored their lead when Marlon Rodriguez's cross was palmed away by goalkeeper Joao Paulo only for Andrade to fire in the rebound.

Cruzeiro now have nine points from four matches and lead second-placed Botafogo on goal difference though the Rio de Janeiro side have a game in hand.

Santos are 11th in the 20-team standings, five points further back.

In Saturday's only other Brazilian Serie A fixture, Vasco da Gama drew 1-1 with Fluminense in their Rio derby at the Maracana stadium.
