WARSAW, May 8 (silubaba) -- Rakow Czestochowa claimed their first-ever Ekstraklasa after second-placed Legia Warsaw suffered a loss to Pogon Szczecin on Sunday.
To secure the title before Legia's match, Marek Papszun's team needed to earn at least one point against Korona Kielce. However, Rakow was defeated by Korona in a surprising 1-0 loss.
Despite their loss, Rakow still had reason to celebrate, as Legia's subsequent 2-1 loss to Pogon guaranteed their victory.
With three matches remaining, Rakow holds an 11-point advantage over Legia.
"I'm thrilled that we are the Polish champions! I want to extend my thanks and congratulations to the players, staff, fans, and everyone else who contributed to our success," said Rakow's club president Michal Swierczewski after the match. ■
