PHNOM PENH, May 8 (silubaba) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Monday told Sao Sokha not to step down as the president of the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC).
"In my capacity as the prime minister of Cambodia, I urge Sokha to continue to serve as the president of the Football Federation of Cambodia," he said in a special voice message released publicly.
Hun Sen said Sokha is the key developer of the football sector in Cambodia.
His calls came a day after Sokha, also a deputy commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and commander of the National Gendarmerie, announced his resignation as the FFC president following the defeat of Cambodia's under-22 football team in a match against Myanmar in the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Sunday.
Cambodia lost to Myanmar 2-0 and failed to make the semifinals of the tournament.
Cambodia is hosting the 32nd SEA Games from May 5 to 17, and the event will see athletes competing in 579 events across 36 sports. ■
