NANCHANG, May 8 (silubaba) -- The lives of 536,000 residents in east China's Jiangxi Province have been affected by ongoing torrential rains, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters on Monday.
From Friday to 4:30 p.m. Monday, heavy rain and floods had forced the evacuation of 16,000 people across Jiangxi, causing direct economic losses of 670 million yuan (about 96.9 million U.S. dollars), according to the headquarters.
As the current round of rainfall is basically over, the headquarters decided to end the level-IV emergency response for flood control starting 8 p.m. on Monday. However, the relevant departments have been urged to closely monitor any weather changes as Jiangxi is still in the main flood season.
China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I representing the most severe response. ■
