LOS ANGELES, May 7 (silubaba) -- Disney and Marvel Studio's superhero film "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3" took the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 114 million U.S. dollars, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.
Based on the Marvel Comics superhero team Guardians of the Galaxy, the film is the final installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy. James Gunn writes and directs "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff.
The film holds a positive approval rating of 81 percent based on 286 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.
Internationally, the film took in 168.1 million dollars, including over 28 million dollars from the Chinese mainland, bringing its global cume to 282.1 million dollars.
Universal Pictures' animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" slipped to second this weekend after four consecutive weeks as box office champ. The animated film based on Nintendo's Mario video game franchise brought in 18.6 million dollars, pushing its North American cume to 518.1 million dollars and bringing its global total to 1.15 billion dollars through Sunday.
Rounding out the top three, "Evil Dead Rise," a supernatural horror film distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, generated 5.73 million dollars on its third weekend for a North American total of 54.1 million dollars. ■
