The curtain of the 2023 Australian Fashion Week (AFW) was unveiled on Monday at Sydney's Carriageworks, a multi-art cultural precinct with a history of over 100 years.

Running from Monday to Friday, this year's AFW features over 40 runway shows, seven-panel conversations, and other additional programs, such as makeup masterclass and experience-sharing talks.

During the AFW, well-established fashion houses will present their new-season garments, with new-generation designers demonstrating the talent for riding the next fashion tide in their eye-catching debuts.

Models, buyers, researchers, casting directors, event organizers, magazine editors, social influencers, and others engaging in the fashion industry are also expected to gather at the annual event and exchange ideas about the latest trends.

"I've been coming to the Australian Fashion Week every year for the past eight years," said Tara Chandra, a Sydney-based digital content creator and upcoming business owner.

For the regular AFW visitor in her 20s, being able to see diverse looks off the runway also explains why she keeps participating in the event year by year.

"Seeing the street styles is always really fun at the fashion week. And I've seen everyone's pulling looks today, which is cool," said Chandra.

Built between 1880 and 1889, the Carriageworks site was once a part of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops and has become one of Australia's most significant contemporary multi-arts centers.

With Carriageworks as its main venue, the AFW also includes some offsite shows held at Clovelly Pool, White Bay Cruise Terminal, and other places across Sydney.
