The first leg of the "A Glimpse of Tang Prosperity from Murals – The Exhibition Tour on Murals of the Tang Dynasty II" for 2023 opened on March 7 at Lunghwa University of Science and Technology (LHU) in Taiwan. During the opening ceremony, Yu Qun, vice chairman of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), and Qian Jikui, chairman of the council of the Shaanxi History Museum, delivered video speeches, while Chen Chunlin, director of the Han-wei Cultural Association in Taiwan, and Andoo Yang, vice president of LHU, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. More than 80 guests from both sides of the Taiwan Strait participated in the event either online or in person.
In his speech, Yu emphasized that Chinese culture is the common root and soul shared by the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and the Tang murals represent the cultural heritage and spiritual wealth of both sides. The first and second editions of "A Glimpse of Tang Prosperity from Murals - The Exhibition Tour on Murals of the Tang Dynasty" have received wide acclaim since being brought to universities in Taiwan by the CSCLF in 2020. He hopes to expand the exhibition's reach to more universities in Taiwan, providing young people with opportunities to deeply understand traditional Chinese culture. Yu also extends a warm welcome to young people in Taiwan to come to the mainland and personally experience the profound heritage and infinite charm of Chinese culture.
Qian Jikui expressed that the Tang murals possess abundant historical, cultural, and artistic values, reflecting the beliefs, worship, customs, and fashion of the Tang dynasty. He hopes that through this exhibition, more discoveries and research results can be shared with friends in Taiwan, promoting cultural exchanges and development across the Strait together.
Chen Chunlin pointed out the significance of the name of the exhibition venue, Longhua University of Technology, which contains the Chinese characters for "dragon" and "flower," both of which are depicted in the Tang murals. He also noted that the murals vividly portray various aspects of Tang Dynasty life, including architecture, art, ritual, clothing, food, sports, leisure, and entertainment, serving as a valuable window into the mysteries of Tang culture. Meanwhile, Andoo Yang shared his impression of the exhibition, highlighting the profound and extensive nature of Chinese culture. He expressed his belief that the exhibition would offer visitors a valuable opportunity to gain insight into this rich cultural heritage.
After the opening ceremony, the guests and teachers and students from LHU visited the exhibition under the guidance of the staff.
The exhibition is centered on the festival culture of the Tang dynasty and features 50 precious murals carefully selected from the tombs of Prince Yi De, Princess Yongtai, and Princess Supreme Fangling. These include representative murals like "Banquet Scene," which vividly depicts Tang dynasty banquets, and "Female Attendant Holding an Object," providing a glimpse into Tang dynasty summer refreshments. To enhance the exhibition's interactive experience, various supporting activities such as cultural lectures, mural copying experiences, and AR photography experiences are provided. Taiwanese food writers are also invited to discuss Sui and Tang dynasty food culture with the audience.
On March 21, Lu Zhiyong from the Shaanxi History Museum will give an online lecture on the protection technology and utilization of the murals.
