"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," written and directed by James Gunn, is a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name. The ensemble cast features Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Sylvester Stallone. The plot follows the Guardians as they embark on a dangerous mission to protect their comrade, Rocket, a genetically engineered bounty hunter with a tragic past. The team of misfits must confront the High Evolutionary, a villainous scientist from Counter-Earth who seeks to forcibly enhance all living beings into a "special race" and who also happens to be Rocket's creator.

The film is the third installment in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise and the 32nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), falling within Phase Five. Boasting an action-packed storyline, stunning visual effects, and a mix of hilarious, quirky moments and emotionally poignant scenes, the film premiered in Beijing and Shanghai on April 28, with Walt Disney Studios hosting advanced screenings, receiving rave reviews from audiences. To generate excitement for the new chapter and delight fans, the first two movies, along with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," were re-screened during the 13th Beijing International Film Festival prior to the premiere events.

However, the film is not without its dramatic backstory and a sense of melancholy. In April 2017, Gunn announced he would write and direct the third installment, but Disney fired him in July 2018 due to the resurfacing of controversial tweets. The studio later reversed its decision in October of the same year, reinstating him as the director. While Gunn initially planned for a fourth "Guardians" movie, plans shifted continuously. In September 2019, he confirmed "Vol. 3" would be his final "Guardians" film, which he reaffirmed in May 2021. In 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery hired Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios, Marvel's rival, making his return to the franchise unlikely. Additionally, in April 2023, actress Saldana stated "Vol. 3" would be her final portrayal of Gamora, while actor Bautista also revealed "Vol. 3" would be his last time playing Drax. All these factors contribute to an emotional goodbye to the original Guardians of the Galaxy cast and crew, who have endeared themselves to audiences.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be released simultaneously in China on May 5, along with North America and many other markets, demonstrating that China has once again embraced synchronous releases after pandemic policy adjustments. Furthermore, 100 advanced screenings were organized across the country on May 3. However, unlike before the COVID-19 pandemic, the casts and crews of recently released Hollywood movies have not planned any visits to China for promotional tours. Instead, they are sending recorded videos to the Chinese premieres.

The superhero film is one of the most highly anticipated releases following the national Labor Day holiday and is the precursor to a wave of Hollywood blockbusters set to hit the Chinese market this summer. Some of the already announced titles include "Fast X" on May 17, "The Little Mermaid" on May 26, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" on June 2, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" on June 9, and "The Flash" on June 16.
