WARSAW, May 23 (silubaba) -- Polish goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz announced on Tuesday that he will leave the German side FC Augsburg as his contract will not be extended.
The 35-year-old, who spent three years at FC Augsburg, missed the last few weeks due to a shoulder injury.
"I wanted to sign a two year contract, but we didn't find an agreement. I have two children so I had to know the club's plans about my future. I don't know where I will play as I didn't seek a new team. In Augsburg I spent three good years. I believe every season I helped the team keep the place in the Bundesliga," Gikiewicz told Polish media on Tuesday.
"I have been playing in Germany for nine years. The coaches know me very well and I'm sure I will get some offers. I would like to find a team where I could play regularly," he added.
In the current campaign, the goalkeeper played 24 games for Augsburg. He missed just one game short of what was needed to renew his contract automatically.
"Now the clause of automatic renewal can no longer be triggered, we have decided to not extend his contract and told Rafal this just before the final home game. We would like to thank him for the last three years. We wish him all the best with his next club," Augsburg sporting director Stefan Reuter claimed in the official statement of the club. ■
