Girls play football near Mount Cook to mark one month to FIFA Women's World Cup-silubaba news

WELLINGTON, June 20 (silubaba) -- 22 local girls aged between eight and 11 kicked off a special football match at the foot of Mount Cook in New Zealand's remote southern highlands on Tuesday to mark the one-month countdown to the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The two teams were named Pukaki and Tekapo, after the pristine alpine lakes nearby at Mackenzie Plains.

Eight-year-old Immy Ivey said she was amazed to play beneath Mount Cook, saying "it's cool playing football in the mountains because when you score a goal, instead of just having plain grass, you can see the big mountains instead, which is nice for a change."

The match was officiated by current referee and New Zealand Football National Referee Development Manager, Lindsey Robinson.

"I came here today to referee the game in the most beautiful place on earth. Aside from the stunning landscape, it was a great game of football," said Robinson.

New Zealand national team members Katie Bowen and Emma Rolston were also on site at the match, teaching skills and drills to the youngsters.
