ISTANBUL, June 21 (silubaba) -- The Global Development Initiative (GDI) proposed by China is a timely guideline and roadmap for healing the post-pandemic world, a Turkish scholar has said.
"Before the pandemic, there was already a slowdown in global development in general, and the pandemic accelerated this economic downshift," said Selcuk Colakoglu, director of the Ankara-based Turkish Center for Asia Pacific Studies, in a recent interview with silubaba.
"National economies have suffered more because of the pandemic measures, with increasingly high inflation and challenges of unemployment and others," Colakoglu said.
According to Colakoglu, China has taken a big step toward the recovery of the whole world through the GDI.
"This is a reflection of China's responsibility to pay attention to global growth in general, and also in the post-pandemic world. This is a roadmap of how global development is put on track," said the scholar.
"The initiative will be a guideline for global development in the next stage in the post-pandemic world," he added.
Colakoglu also highlighted China's growing role in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), saluting China's efforts in providing funds to those countries in need and positive momentum for the development of economies joining the BRI.
In Colakoglu's view, the GDI is also a concrete roadmap and blueprint for achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
"In this regard, China is setting a more specific agenda for its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals," he said. "So if other leading economies support similar initiatives, then we can come closer to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within the framework of the United Nations documents."
Colakoglu also spoke highly of China's development over the last four decades, including creating new jobs and elevating millions of people from absolute poverty.
The GDI, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021, aims to foster a development paradigm featuring benefits for all, balance, coordination, inclusiveness, win-win cooperation and common prosperity. ■
