Soares on target as Botafogo sink Palmeiras

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Tiquinho Soares continued his rich vein of scoring form as Botafogo extended their lead at the top of Brazil's Serie A standings on Sunday with a 1-0 away win over defending champions Palmeiras.

Soares pounced on a poor headed clearance before cutting inside his marker and angling a left-footed shot into the far corner.

The 32-year-old has now scored 21 times in 34 matches across all competitions for Botafogo this season, including 10 goals from 11 outings in the top flight.

Palmeiras could count themselves unlucky, having squandered several chances to draw level.

Gustavo Gomez found the back of the net just before halftime but the goal was overturned by the video assistant referee.

Raphael Veiga then sent a penalty attempt wide of the target after Leonel Di Placido brought down Jose Lopez.

The result leaves Botafogo seven points clear of second-placed Gremio after 12 games while Palmeiras dropped to fourth in the 20-team standings, eight points off the pace.

In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Sunday, Bragantino won 2-0 at home to Goias, Flamengo prevailed 3-2 at Santos, Internacional secured a 2-1 victory at America Mineiro and Gremio cruised to a 5-1 home win over Coritiba.
