The first edition of the Mediterrane Film Festival kicked off in Valletta on Monday, aiming to foster collaboration, opportunity, and a shared love for film among Mediterranean countries.
The week-long event brought together filmmakers and film-lovers from the MED9 countries, namely Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Croatia.
At the opening ceremony, Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech said Malta aims to create a sustainable, year-round film industry that provides increasing opportunities for the Maltese people.
Last year, Malta saw a record 24 productions, contributing significantly to the economy, he said.
"In order to make the film industry an economic powerhouse we must plan ahead to assure that Malta's story in filmmaking continues to flourish in the years to come," said Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo.
The festival includes masterclasses on production design for film and TV, costume design, choosing the location for a film, raising money and camera equipment provision across the Mediterranean, among others. It will end on Friday with an award ceremony.
