Leaders Botafogo extend winning run as Vasco flounder-silubaba news

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 2 (silubaba) -- Luis Henrique and Carlos Alberto scored second-half goals as leaders Botafogo secured a 2-0 home win over Vasco da Gama in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.

Henrique opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when he played a slick one-two with Tiquinho Soares and angled a left-footed shot into the far corner.

Carlos Alberto doubled the advantage in stoppage time by dribbling half the length of the pitch, evading a Jose Rodriguez tackle and firing a shot past goalkeeper Leo Jardim.

The result at Rio de Janeiro's Olympic stadium leaves Botafogo with 33 points from 13 games, seven points clear of second-placed Gremio. The Glorioso have now won four consecutive Serie A matches as they bid for their first Brazilian top flight crown since 1995.

Vasco are 18th in the 20-team standings with just two wins so far.

In other Brazilian Serie A fixtures on Sunday, Cuiaba won 3-0 at home to Santos, Palmeiras drew 2-2 at Athletico Paranaense, Atletico Mineiro were held to a 1-1 home draw by America Mineiro and Bragantino prevailed 1-0 at Corinthians.
