GUANGZHOU, July 5 (silubaba) -- Giannis Antetokounmpo, star forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, has identified the NBA title as his team's singular objective for the upcoming season.
"Our goal for the next season is to win a championship. There's nothing less, nothing more," the Greek national told silubaba here on Wednesday.
"But you have to understand that it doesn't always happen. The goal is like you are having a test, you want to get the hundred out of the hundred value and ace the test. But it doesn't always happen," he added.
Antetokounmpo visited a primary school in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, showcasing his basketball skills in front of about 100 pupils.
"When I came to China for the first time in 2014, some of these kids were not even born. It's nine years. So it's crazy to see how many people throughout my journey that I'm able to inspire," Antetokounmpo said.
Despite securing the top spot of the Eastern Conference in the regular season, the Bucks exited the playoffs in the 2022-2023 season, losing to the Miami Heat 4-1 in the first round.
But in the post-match press conference, Antetokounmpo insisted that Milwaukee's season had not been a failure, and the 28-year-old maintains this perspective.
"As the last interview I had in the press conference, I don't believe in failure in sports, I believe that there are always steps to success.
"There are 450 players in NBA now, with the two-way contracts to be 500 players, and only 18 players to be champion this year. So the other 482 players are failures? I don't agree. So at the end of the day, the steps to success are as long as you wake up every single day, you don't give up and you keep on moving towards the goal that you want. That's what the success is for me," he added. ■
