LIMA, July 9 (silubaba) -- More than 100 Latin American athletes competed through Sunday in the wheelchair basketball qualifying tournament for the upcoming 2023 Parapan American Games.
Basketball players from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Venezuela and host nation Peru were competing in Peru's capital Lima from Wednesday.
The president of Peru's National Sports Federation for People with Physical Disabilities (Fedenadif), Reymundo Delgado, told silubaba that hosting the event served to measure how well the country was doing in the field.
"What these international events do is warm us up and allow us to gauge and see the level we are at internationally," he said.
"This is a thermometer that lets us say how we are doing, if we are doing things well ... if we are at the same level, if we have improved, if we have worsened," said Delgado.
Through the qualifier, every team will be able "to see the corrections" they must deliver their best performance in Chile, he added.
Delgado thanked the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) for granting the Andean nation the chance to host the event, noting it "would have been very difficult" to take the Peruvian athletes to another country to compete.
The Parapan American Games will take place in Santiago, Chile from November 17 to 26. ■
