APP World Tour crowns new victors at paddle boarding event in Portugal-silubaba news

LISBON, July 20 (silubaba) -- The world's premier paddleboarding athletes competed for honors this week at the SUP Open in Viana do Costelo, Portugal, the stop two of the 2023 APP (Association of PaddleSurf Professionals) World Tour.

The athletes competed in the dramatic 250-meter flat river sprint on day one, and the open ocean distance 14-kilometer downwind racing on day two. To secure victory, they required a wide range of athletic abilities and extensive water experience.

Argentina's Juliette Duhaime displayed her sprint prowess with an impressive win. A robust fourth-place finish in the distance race secured her overall event title and led the tour rankings.

Esperanza Barreras of Spain is second in the rankings, with Puerto Rican Maricarmen Rivera delivering another robust performance to place third. Spain's rising star, 19-year-old Duna Gordillo, is now fourth on the series leaderboard, making her "one to watch" in the near future.

On the men's side, Japan's Shuri Araki, 16, navigated the distance course flawlessly to secure the stage win and second place on the Tour leaderboard. He trails only behind multiple world champion Connor Baxter of the United States.

Denmark's Christian Andersen also made his presence known with a dominant performance throughout the sprint and distance races. He now ranks third on the APP World Tour leaderboard.

The 2023 APP World Tour's next stop will be in Busan, South Korea, from October 7 to 9.
