WELLINGTON, July 23 (silubaba) -- South Africa initially led with a surprise goal, but Sweden turned the tide of the game, ending with a 2-1 victory thanks to Amanda Ilestedt's last-minute winner in Group G of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup here on Sunday.
Sweden, considered a favorite for the World Cup, maintained dominance since the game's outset but struggled to find the back of the net. In an unexpected turn, it was the underdog, South Africa, that first shattered the deadlock in the 48th minute when Zecira Musovic redirected a deflected strike into the path of Hildah Magaia, who nudged it into the goal.
The bronze medalists of the 2019 World Cup, Sweden, staved off a significant upset as they equalized through Fridolina Rolfo. The game reached its climax when Ilestedt soared to meet a corner, scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute.
Sweden will face off against Italy next Saturday, while South Africa prepares to compete against Argentina. ■
