AUCKLAND, July 24 (silubaba) -- Italy's 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup trip started on the right foot as veteran Cristiana Girelli's goal proved decisive, helping the Azzurre beat Argentina 1-0 in Group G on Monday.
This is Italy's second consecutive and fourth overall appearance at a Women's World Cup, while Argentina are seeking a breakthrough as they have yet to reach the knockout phase or even register a win in their previous three World Cup appearances.
Argentina had their first attempt inside the first minute, as Mariana Larroquette's volley went wide of the post, while at the other end, Valentina Giacinti shot straight at goalkeeper Vanina Correa.
Italy had the ball into the net twice in the first half, but both Arianna Caruso and Giacinti's celebrations were cut short due to offside.
Argentina full-back Eliana Stabile tested Francesca Durante as her in-swinging free kick was parried away by the goalkeeper.
In a desperate bid for an opening victory, Italy threw on Girelli in the 83rd minute which turned out to be the turning point.
Four minutes later, Lisa Boattin whipped in a cross from the left, and Girelli out-jumped her marker to beat Correa with a looping header.
Deep into stoppage time, the Albiceleste had a chance to equalize, but Durante saved Florencia Bonsegundo's free-kick from 20 yards.
In an earlier Group G fixture on Sunday, Sweden beat South Africa 2-1.
