Britain finishes 1-2 in men's 200m freestyle at swimming worlds-silubaba news

FUKUOKA, Japan, July 25 (silubaba) -- Britain's Matthew Richards scored a surprise victory in the men's 200m freestyle final at the World Aquatics Championships here on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old, who was eliminated in the first round at the Budapest worlds last year, overtook defending champion David Popovici in the last 15 meters to hit the wall first in 1:44.30.

His compatriot Tom Dean, the Olympic champion, took silver at 0.02 seconds behind. South Korea's Hwang Sun-woo finished third in 1:44.42.

The 18-year-old Romanian sensation Popovici, who was voted Male Swimmer of the Year in 2022, settled for fourth in 1:44.90.
