AUCKLAND, July 26 (silubaba) -- Spain and Japan progressed out of Group C hand in hand at the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup after beating their rivals respectively on Wednesday.
Having routed Costa Rica 3-0 in the opening match, Spain took a dream start against Zambia just nine minutes into the game when Teresa Abelleira unleashed a stunner into the net, four minutes before Jennifer Hermoso headed it in at the back post on Alexia Putellas's pinpoint assist.
Spain showed no mercy after the break, as Alba Redondo rounded the goalkeeper to slot into the net and Hermoso bagged a brace, before Redondo put the icing on the cake by sealing the game 5-0.
The victory also secured a last-16 spot for Japan who beat Costa Rica 2-0 in an earlier fixture on Wednesday. Japan will meet Spain in the third round on Monday to decide the group winner. ■
