MADRID, July 27 (silubaba) -- Real Sociedad's 37-year-old attacking midfielder David Silva confirmed on Thursday that he is retiring after suffering a serious knee injury in pre-season training.
The 37-year-old had signed a one-year contract extension with the club from San Sebastian, but after tearing his left cruciate knee ligament preparing for the new campaign, he has decided to draw the curtain on a career that saw him make 783 league appearances, while playing 125 times for the Spanish national team.
"Today is a sad day for me. Today I have to say goodbye to something I have dedicated my life to. Today I have to say goodbye to my companions, who are like a family to me."
"I am going to miss you all," wrote Silva on social media, making reference to all of the clubs he has played for in his career.
Born in the Canary Islands, Silva began his career with Valencia, spending time on loan at Eibar and Celta Vigo, before joining Manchester City in 2010. ■
