KAMPALA, July 28 (silubaba) -- Uganda's top athlete Joshua Cheptegei said he is getting back in good form ahead of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, which will take place from August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary.
Cheptegei, reigning Olympic champion in 5,000m and silver medalist in 10,000m, told silubaba that after starting the season with an injury, he is now getting his speed back.
"I am happy that we are working hard with the coaches, and my speed and endurance is back. I am determined to go to Hungary to perform well because that is what motivates me to perform well for myself and my country," added Cheptegei.
Cheptegei, world record holder for both 5,000m and 10,000m, said that he and other members of the Ugandan team are all working hard to get ready for the athletics showpiece.
"The World Championships also needs a lot of teamwork and all the other athletes are also preparing well ahead of the trip to Hungary. We are confident we shall perform well," added Cheptegei, two-time 10,000m world champion and 2019 world cross country champion.
While Cheptegei is expected to lead the Ugandan team, eyes will also be on double Commonwealth Games champion Jacob Kiplimo.
Dominic Otuchet, president of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), confirmed that Uganda will be represented by 20 athletes in different categories.
Otuchet made it clear that they are confident the team will perform well because most of the athletes are very experienced and know what competing at the big stage means.
"They are now polishing up in the remaining days to be in shape ahead of the Championship," added Otuchet.
