CHENGDU, July 29 (silubaba) -- India secured three shooting gold medals, while South Korea captured the other on Day-1 competitions of the 31st FISU World University Games here on Saturday.
"We are all very happy and excited for the Games. When you are happy, you can have an even better performance. Our team worked hard to win the gold medals," said Indian shooter Manu Bhaker, a gold medalist of women's 10m air pistol and women's 10m air pistol team events.
Her compatriot, Elavenil Valarivan, claimed first place in the women's 10m air rifle, while Mary Tucker of the United States and Xing Hang of China garnered silver and bronze, respectively.
Tucker, who scored 631.2 points to top the qualification, couldn't repeat her feat in the final. "I had some struggles but also good parts in the match. After winning a silver at the Tokyo Olympics, I continued to improve myself and kept the momentum in the past several years," she said.
Tucker, who is currently studying at West Virginia University, has enrolled in numerous sports-related classes, including psychology, which has aided her shooting. "I love multi-sport events like this in Chengdu, where people from all over the world can communicate with each other and become friends," she added.
Xing started slow in the 10m air rifle final with 9.7 and 9.8 points on her first two shots, but she adjusted quickly to stage a comeback.
Chinese shooters also secured a silver in the women's 10m air pistol team event and a bronze in the women's 10m air rifle team event.
South Korea clinched the women's 10m air rifle team gold with 1,883 points. ■
