MADRID, Aug. 1 (silubaba) -- Real Madrid's French left-back Ferland Mendy will miss the opening game of the new season after the club confirmed he has suffered a hamstring injury.
Mendy had to be substituted before halftime in his side's 3-0 defeat to FC Barcelona in Texas at the weekend and was replaced by summer signing Fran Garcia.
The club has now confirmed the defender "has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the right biceps femoris," and adds that "his progress will be monitored."
Although Real Madrid does not give a date for Mendy's return, he had no chance of recovering in time to be fit for Real Madrid's La Liga opener away to Athletic Club Bilbao on August 12 and has to be considered a major doubt for their home game against Almeria a week later.
Mendy struggled with several injuries last season, which limited him to 18 appearances in La Liga and five in the Champions League.
Former Rayo Vallecano defender, Garcia is likely to be Mendy's replacement in the side, although David Alaba could also start on the left of defense.
Real Madrid is currently continuing on their North American tour and has arrived in Orlando (Florida), where they will play Juventus in their last pre-season match before the start of the campaign.
Besides their 3-0 defeat to Barca, Real Madrid has beaten AC Milan 3-2 and defeated Manchester United 2-0 on their tour. ■
