RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 1 (silubaba) -- Vasco da Gama are in advanced talks to sign naturalized Spanish striker Diego Costa, according to media reports in Brazil.
Costa has been without a club since parting ways with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in June.
His status as a free agent means Vasco have until August 25 to secure the 34-year-old's signature, three weeks after Brazil's winter transfer deadline for contracted players.
Local news outlet Gazeta Esportiva said on Tuesday that Vasco director Paulo Bracks was traveling to Madrid this week in a bid to finalize a deal.
Costa, who was born in Brazil but became a Spanish citizen in 2013 and represented La Roja in two World Cups, has also reportedly attracted the interest of clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia.
Vasco are currently last in Brazil's 20-team Serie A standings with just two wins from 16 matches so far this season. ■
