RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 1 (silubaba) -- Teenager Wesley Gassova scored a second-half winner as Corinthians edged toward a place in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals with a 2-1 home win over Newell's Old Boys on Tuesday.
Marcos Portillo gave the visitors the lead with a low finish on the stroke of halftime but Yuri Alberto equalized when he converted a 57th-minute penalty.
18-year-old Gassova, who replaced Matheus Araujo at halftime, put the Brazilian side ahead by combining with Angel Romero and firing a shot into the bottom right corner.
The return fixture will be played at Estadio Marcelo Bielsa in the Argentine city of Rosario on August 8.
In other Copa Sudamericana round-of-16 first leg fixtures on Tuesday, Fortaleza won 1-0 at Libertad and Defensa y Justicia clinched a 2-1 victory at Emelec. ■
