CHENGDU, Aug. 4 (silubaba) -- Swimmers from Team China bagged three golds and one bronze at the ongoing Chengdu Universiade here on Friday as Olympic champion Li Bingjie showed her dominance in freestyle.
In the women's 1,500m freestyle final, Li, the Fukuoka world championships bronze medalist of the event, was in a class of her own as she swam 16 minutes 18.48 seconds for the title.
"When I was competing at the 1,500m freestyle, I have saved my strength for the following relay competition," Li told silubaba.
In the midway of women's 4x200m freestyle relay, China only ranked 3rd, trailing temporarily leader South Africa by 1.72 seconds. Olympic gold medalist Zhang Yufei kept chasing and turned the game around in the third leg. Li helped the host win the event in seven minutes 58.77 seconds.
The United States finished the second in 8:02.28 and Japan came third after clocking 8:04.29.
"We had normal performance today, I was under a little bit pressure in relay, however, I am satisfied with the result," Li said.
Chinese breaststroke specialist Qin Haiyang won men's 200m breaststroke title in two minutes 8.90 seconds. What's more, he became the event's newly-promoted FISU record holder.
In men's 200m fly final, Terada Takumi of Japan finished first in one minute and 55.66 seconds, beating Wang Kuan-hung of Chinese Taipei (1:55.69) and Chen Juner of Team China (1:56.16).
"I have to improve my training quality in future. However, I have saved no efforts today," Chen said.
In the other three finals on Friday, Anita Gastaldi of Italy won women's 200m IM in two minutes 12.74 seconds, Poland's Adela Piskorska touched first in one minute 0.20 seconds at women's 100m backstroke and Simone Stefani of Italy won men's 50m backstroke in 24.98. ■
