JERUSALEM, Aug. 7 (silubaba) -- The 2023 European Athletics U20 Championships commenced at Jerusalem's Givat Ram Stadium on Monday, featuring 1,157 athletes from 44 countries and regions.
A standout name in the four-day contest is Dutch up-and-comer Niels Laros, holder of the European under-20 season's best in the 800m, 1,500m, and 5,000m events. Laros will compete in these three disciplines in Jerusalem.
Italy's Mattia Furlani, a dual gold medalist in the long and high jump at the 2022 European U18 Championships in Jerusalem, will this time focus on the long jump. With a European season's best of 8.24m, he is the evident favorite for gold.
In the women's competition, Serbia's Angelina Topic is set to participate in both high and long jump events, following her European under-18 high jump gold victory last year.
Topic has recently elevated her personal bests in both disciplines, reaching 1.97m in the high jump and 6.58m in the long jump. These two performances position her atop the European under-20 season's best.
Topic's compatriot, Adriana Vilagos, is the favorite to win the javelin throw gold after achieving 61.87m in late June, the sole European under-20 to surpass the 60m mark this season.
Croatia's Klara Koscak and her younger sister Jana aim for a family double gold. They both currently top the European season-best list in their disciplines, with Klara clocking 13.22 seconds in the 100m hurdles and Jana amassing 6,293 points in the heptathlon. ■
