BRISBANE, Australia, Aug. 12 (silubaba) -- After a breathless 10-round-penalty shootout, co-hosts Australia finally confirmed their place in the FIFA Women's World Cup semifinals by eliminating France here on Saturday.
Though both sides had several opportunities, neither could break the deadlock in 120 minutes of action.
In extra time, Australia's Alanna Kennedy put the ball into her own net following a corner, but the goal was disallowed as the referee adjudged that France captain Wendie Renard had fouled Caitlin Foord.
Into the penalty shootout, Selma Bacha missed France's first kick, though parity was restored after both sides' second penalties, with France goalkeeper Solene Durand saving from Steph Catley.
In the ninth round of penalties, Australia keeper Mackenzie Arnold dramatically saved twice from Kenza Dali, after a retake was ordered when Arnold had moved off her line.
After Vicki Becho missed France's next kick, Cortnee Vine then netted the winning penalty for Australia.
"I'm so proud. The bravery and the heart this team showed is unbelievable. To the crowd, I can only say thank you. Thanks for supporting this team and believing in them. This team belongs to every single person in this country," said Australia coach Tony Gustavsson. ■
