The documentary titled "40," directed by Yang Yanyi and Cang Bai, pays tribute to the choir's dedication to nurturing young talent and amplifying China's voice globally. Established in 1983 by esteemed conductor and educator Yang Hongnian, the Beijing Philharmonic Choir has emerged as an inspiration for aspiring performers and a symbol of artistic brilliance.
Being a part of this choir has been transformative for many young members, fostering personal growth and a deep appreciation for arts and culture. This exceptional choir has graced prestigious stages worldwide, captivating audiences and leaving a lasting mark. Their performances have been showcased at major events, from the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the Beijing National Stadium to the beloved CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Having garnered over fourty international awards, their standing in the world of choral music is indisputable.
Internationally recognized as the songbirds from China, the Beijing Philharmonic Choir represents not only musical excellence but also a nurturing environment for the fortunate children who have embarked on this extraordinary journey. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, the choir has received heartwarming video greetings from its members, past and present. Through these testimonials, the choir's 40-year journey is vividly recalled, illustrating the transformative impact of youth music education and the deep bonds forged within this musical family.
In a momentous event on April 27, 2021, at 11:20 a.m., the emblem of the Beijing Philharmonic Choir and their choral song "Echoes in the Emerald Valley" were launched into space aboard China's premier real-time imaging satellite, Hangsheng 1. This gesture reflects the choir's ambition to further extend its musical outreach. "Since its establishment, the choir has carried our voices to many places worldwide. Now, our songs will ascend to space, reaching across the universe!" proclaimed Yang Li, the current president and principal conductor of the Beijing Philharmonic Choir.
Professor Yang Hongnian noted that standout Chinese choral pieces always echo real life, capturing the essence of the times. Through these well-constructed compositions, listeners gain insights into that particular era. Thus, music becomes a powerful connector, conveying China's voice and stories to the world. For four decades, the Beijing Philharmonic Choir has embraced this philosophy, using music as a force to tell Chinese stories and share China's voice globally.
The documentary "40" is set to be released online on Aug. 21.
