Team DSM take surprise win in rain-soaked first stage of Tour of Spain-silubaba news

BARCELONA, Aug. 26 (silubaba) -- Team DSM-Firminich won the time trial in the opening stage of the Tour of Spain cycling race here on Saturday.

The Dutch team crossed the finish line in a flat 14.8-km course around the streets of Barcelona in 17 minutes and 30 seconds, just half a second ahead of Spain's Movistar team and six in front of EF-Education-Easypost.

The result means DSM's Lorenzo Milesi is the first rider to wear the overall leader's red jersey.

The start of the stage coincided with a heavy rainstorm, which turned several tight corners into a virtual ice-rink, with several riders, such as Laurens De Plus and several members of the Jayco Alula team hitting the floor.

Given the danger, several teams, such as the Jumbo Visma, Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic opted on the side of caution.

The Soudal Quick-Step of reigning champion Remco Evenepoel were fourth on the stage. Evenepoel commented that the conditions were ridiculous.

Sunday's race sees a medium mountain stage, which begins in Mataro and finishes in Barcelona again.
