NEW DELHI, Aug. 28 (silubaba) -- Indians sprung to jubilation on Monday after Neeraj Chopra won a gold medal in men's javelin throw event at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Chopra finished with a stunning 88.17 meters to clinch the gold, thus also becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold in any track and field event at the World Athletics Championships.
He had also won gold in the same event in the Tokyo Olympics.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in congratulating Chopra on achieving the rare feat, saying "The talented Neeraj Chopra exemplifies excellence. His dedication, precision and passion make him not just a champion in athletics but a symbol of unparalleled excellence in the entire sports world. Congrats to him for winning the gold at the World Athletics Championships."
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said: "The golden boy of Indian athletics wins the men's javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. With this, Neeraj Chopra becomes first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. The entire nation is proud of your achievements and this moment will be remembered forever in Indian sporting history." ■
