Testing methods for Beijing 2022 clear and transparent, says German medical chief

BERLIN, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The chief medical officer of Germany's Winter Olympic squad has eased concerns of athletes and coaches about unclear testing methods at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Bernd Wolfarth said he regards the chance of unclear or manipulated tests as "rather unlikely."

Several German coaches and athletes had expressed concerns about unclear testing regulations. The German Alpine head coach Wolfgang Maier spoke of his concern and possible manipulations. Maier demanded to clearly communicate test procedures and the so-called CT figure.

The CT figure is said to give evidence of how infectious a tested person is. The red line set by Chinese authorities and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is at a CT figure of 40.

In Germany, a person is regarded as not significantly infectious at a level of over 30. The lower the examined figure is, the more a person is regarded as infectious.

Wolfarth called the guidelines "very clear and transparent."

The guidelines for athletes and coaches are very clear, Wolfarth added. "There have been no newly implemented or increased measures for the Games. The current regulations are grounded on the framework set by the zero-COVID policy of the Chinese government," the German professor stated.

Wolfarth has been head of the medical section of the German Olympic Association (DOSB) since the 2012 Games.

"For entering the country, a figure of 40 has been implemented," the German doctor said at a press conference at the Institute for Applied Scientific Training in Leipzig.

This might be a different approach to the one used in Europe, "but it has been openly communicated."

As tests after weeks could still be slightly positive, a combined commission of Chinese and European experts has been implemented.

The new commission is dealing with doubtful cases and is said to make a final decision.

"Plans speak of several tests in advance. There is always the option to demand further control, testing and investigation."

The same procedures had been implemented for the summer Games in Tokyo.

Wolfarth spoke of a possible competitive distortion when athletes are tested positive at present and are not allowed to enter the country despite their figures reliably dropping over the following weeks.
