BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 23 (silubaba) -- Geronimo Rivera scored a superb second-half goal as Banfield clinched a 1-0 away victory over Velez Sarsfield in Argentina's Primera Division on Monday.
The 20-year-old forward latched onto Milton Gimenez's headed flick before rifling an unstoppable 20-yard shot into the top-right corner.
The result lifted Banfield to third in the 14-team Group A, three points behind leaders Independiente. Velez are sixth, a point further back.
In Monday's only other Primera Division fixture, Zaid Romero struck late as Estudiantes edged to a 2-1 home victory over Sarmiento.
Mauro Boselli put the hosts ahead by converting a 43rd-minute penalty before Juan Cruz equalized early in the second half. Romero restored his side's lead by heading home from point-blank range after Jose Sosa's delivery from a corner. ■
