TORONTO, Oct. 28 (silubaba) -- Philadelphia 76ers teammates Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey had 34 points apiece to capture the team's first win of the season in a 114-107 victory over Toronto Raptors on Saturday.
Cameroon-native Embiid, the reigning regular season MVP, had a well-rounded game with nine rebounds, eight assists and two blocks. 22-year-old Maxey drilled seven 3-pointers on nine attempts after a scoreless first quarter.
With the win, Sixers improve to 1-1 on the season and give new head coach Nick Nurse his first win with the franchise.
Nurse joined Philadelphia in the offseason after his 10-year tenure in Toronto ended. He was head coach of the Raptors from 2018-2023, including the 2018-2019 championship year.
"I wasn't maybe ready to come back this quick," Nurse admitted after the game. "It felt way more stranger than I thought it would feel. I've left teams and come back to coach again them, but it's 10 years. My kids were born here, just unbelievable the way people have treated me here and unbelievable city."
Sixers front office hopes Nurse can unlock the team's full potential to reach the NBA finals for the first time since 2001. ■
