Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.27 percent to 2,893.99 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.31 percent higher at 8,992.07 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices totaled 684.84 billion yuan (about 96.28 billion U.S. dollars), up from 610.92 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to the tourism, airports and shipping sectors led the gains, while stocks in the short plays, precious metal, as well as oil and gas exploitation sectors saw heavy losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.38 percent to close at 1,752.23 points Tuesday.
