Captain Chery leaves Maccabi Haifa due to family issues

JERUSALEM, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Tjaronn Chery, the Dutch-Surinamese star and captain of Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa, will leave the club next week on loan due to his son's medical issues, Haifa said Thursday.

"About two months ago, Chery revealed to us a family medical problem, related to his little son," said Haifa's president Jacob Shachar in a statement released by the club. "It prevents his family in the Netherlands from joining him in Israel."

Shachar added, "During this period we jointly tried to find a solution, but with no success, so we had to accept Chery's request to go on loan to a Dutch club and return for the next season."

Several Dutch and Israeli media reported that SC Heerenveen and NEC Nijmegen of the Eredivisie are interested in signing the 35-year-old midfielder.

According to the Israeli club, Chery will leave Israel after the League Cup final match, in which Haifa will play against Maccabi Tel Aviv on January 24.

Chery led Maccabi Haifa to win three consecutive Israeli league championship titles in the last three seasons, along with one league cup title and two Israeli Super Cup titles.

Along with 177 matches and 45 goals in Israeli competitions, Chery has 38 appearances and 10 goals in the European competitions in the Haifa jersey.

This includes six appearances in the UEFA Champions League, in which he scored two goals, against Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica.

His career also encompasses Dutch clubs, including FC Groningen with whom he won the Dutch Cup in 2015, Queens Park Rangers in the English Championship, Guizhou Zhicheng in the Chinese Super League, and Kayserispor of the Turkish Super League.

Chery also played five times for the Suriname national team.

Meanwhile, Haifa also announced the signing of Israeli 36-year-old striker Tomer Hemed, who returned to the team after 12 and a half years in which he played in Spain, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel's Hapoel Beer Sheva.
